There are things we cannot see because they are too far away, and there are things we cannot see because we are standing too close.

Civilization has devoted extraordinary effort to solving the first problem. We have built telescopes to extend vision across billions of light-years, microscopes to enter worlds invisible to the eye, instruments capable of detecting what none of our senses can perceive, and machines capable of examining quantities of information beyond the capacity of any individual mind. Much of human progress has proceeded from the assumption that if something remains unclear, we should move closer, look harder, measure more precisely, gather more information, and increase the resolution.

This has served us remarkably well. It may also have concealed another form of blindness.
